SBP reserves target: $23 billion by December

SBP Governor Jameel Ahmed has said the central bank expects its reserves to reach $23 billion by December 2026 and $25 billion by June 2027. At $21.52 billion, SBP needs to add about $1.5 billion in the next two months to meet the December target.

Why reserves matter

  • Import cover: higher reserves mean Pakistan can pay for imports, including oil, for longer without stress.
  • Stable rupee: strong reserves have supported the rupee’s long winning streak against the dollar.
  • Investor confidence: lenders and rating agencies watch reserves closely when judging Pakistan’s ability to repay debt.
