Pakistan’s National CERT has urged TeamViewer users to install the latest TeamViewer security update, version 15.83 or later, after a high-severity flaw was found in older versions. The bug could let a malicious remote computer crash TeamViewer or run harmful code, but only when you connect to a computer controlled by an attacker.

TeamViewer disclosed the issue in its security bulletin TV-2026-1011, and Canada’s Centre for Cyber Security published a matching advisory on 28 October 2026.

TeamViewer security update: affected versions

Product Affected Update to
TeamViewer Full Client (Windows, macOS, Linux) Before 15.83 15.83 or later
TeamViewer Host (Windows, macOS, Linux) Before 15.83 15.83 or later
TeamViewer Portable (Windows) Before 15.83 15.83 or later
TeamViewer Remote Control app (Android) Before 15.8.3 15.8.3 or later

What the flaw does

The weakness is in the part of TeamViewer that handles screen data coming from the other computer. Specially crafted data can corrupt memory, which may crash the app or, on some systems, let an attacker run code with TeamViewer’s own permissions.

The key point for ordinary users: the attack is not automatic. It needs you to connect to a computer the attacker controls. That is exactly what happens in common “tech support” scams, where a caller asks you to open TeamViewer and connect to them.

How to update TeamViewer

  1. Open TeamViewer and go to Help → Check for new version (on Windows) or use the app’s update prompt.
  2. Install the update and restart TeamViewer.
  3. Check the version under Help → About TeamViewer; it should show 15.83 or higher.
  4. On Android, update the TeamViewer Remote Control app from Google Play.
  5. Update portable copies too; they do not update themselves. Download only from teamviewer.com.

Safety steps National CERT recommends

  • Update every TeamViewer installation, including old and portable versions.
  • Accept or start remote sessions only with people you have verified.
  • Limit remote access to approved users and devices.
  • Review unattended access and admin rights.
  • Watch for unexpected TeamViewer crashes or unknown sessions.

If you cannot update immediately, block remote connections from untrusted sources. If you suspect a computer was compromised, keep its logs, disconnect remote access and get help from your IT team.

What this means for Pakistani users

TeamViewer is widely used by small businesses, freelancers and IT support teams in Pakistan. Offices that leave TeamViewer running for unattended access should treat this update as urgent. For home users, the simplest rule is: never connect to a stranger’s computer because a caller or message asks you to, whether they claim to be from a bank, a telecom company or a government department.

Who needs the TeamViewer security update most

Home users who open TeamViewer once in a while are at low risk, but they should still install the TeamViewer security update the next time they use the app. The users who should act today are:

  • IT support teams that connect to many client computers every day, because each new connection is a chance to reach a compromised machine.
  • Freelancers and outsourcing firms that log in to foreign clients’ systems.
  • Offices with unattended access on servers or accounts computers, where an old version may run for months without anyone noticing.
  • Anyone using an old portable copy saved on a USB drive or in a downloads folder.

If your organisation manages TeamViewer centrally, ask the administrator to push the TeamViewer security update to all devices and to remove old versions that are no longer needed. Keeping a simple list of which computers have remote access installed makes the next update much faster.
