Why charging stations matter

The biggest worry for EV buyers in Pakistan is running out of charge on long trips between cities. Most EV owners today charge at home, and public fast chargers on intercity routes are few. Stations along the motorways and the N-5, the main north-south highway, would make trips such as Lahore to Islamabad or Peshawar to Karachi practical in an EV.

Who will build them?

The plan relies mainly on private investors, including oil marketing companies that run fuel stations at motorway service areas. To attract them, the government is offering a dedicated commercial electricity tariff for charging and faster electricity connections. The reply did not give the cost of the plan or a date for completing the first 40 stations.

What it means for car buyers

If the first phase is built on time, buyers considering an EV or plug-in hybrid will have more confidence for intercity travel. Until then, EVs remain best suited to city use with home charging. Check the charging network on your regular routes before buying.
