The income tax return deadline 2026 is now 31 October 2026. On 15 October, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) extended the date for filing Tax Year 2026 returns for the second time, after first moving it from 30 September to 15 October. The extension was granted under Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001.

Date What happened
30 September 2026 Original last date for individuals and AOPs to file Tax Year 2026 returns
30 September 2026 FBR extended the date to 15 October (Circular No. 3 of 2026-27)
15 October 2026 FBR extended the date again, to 31 October 2026

The new date applies to people who were required to file by 30 September 2026 and whose deadline had already been moved to 15 October (APP, Dawn).

Why FBR extended the deadline again

FBR said it gave more time on the request of trade bodies and tax bar associations. Tax practitioners had pointed to new return forms, extra disclosure requirements, wealth statement reconciliation and problems on the IRIS portal. According to Profit, the draft return form was issued on 7 May 2026, but the final form was notified only on 2 September, leaving taxpayers less than a month before the original deadline.

Filing numbers are still higher than last year. FBR had received about 5.8 million returns by 30 September 2026, compared with 3.8 million by the same date in 2025.

Who the new date applies to

The extended income tax return deadline 2026 covers everyone whose return was originally due on 30 September 2026. In practice, this includes salaried people, individuals with business or rental income, and associations of persons (AOPs). Companies follow a separate due date set in the Income Tax Ordinance, so they should check with their tax adviser.

If you have already filed, you do not need to do anything else. If you filed with mistakes, you can generally revise a return on IRIS, but keep records of the original submission.

How to file your return on IRIS

  1. Log in to FBR’s IRIS portal with your CNIC and password. New filers must first register as taxpayers on IRIS.
  2. Open the return form for Tax Year 2026 (July 2025 to June 2026).
  3. Enter income from salary, business, property or other sources, and the tax already deducted, using your salary certificate and bank tax deduction statements.
  4. Complete the wealth statement, listing assets and liabilities as of 30 June 2026, and reconcile it with your income and expenses.
  5. Pay any tax due through a payment slip (PSID), then submit both the return and the wealth statement.
  6. Download and keep the acknowledgement for your records.

Why filing before 31 October matters

Meeting the income tax return deadline 2026 keeps you on FBR’s Active Taxpayers List (ATL). Filing on time generally means lower withholding tax on banking, property and vehicle transactions than non-filers pay. Late filers can also face penalties under the Income Tax Ordinance. Do not wait for another extension: FBR has not said it will move the date again, and the IRIS portal tends to slow down near the last day.
